Virtual Pond Dip If, like me, you feel a little embarrassed by being able to identify only two of the little devils lurking in the murk, try this fantastic site.  It's especially good if you don't even have a pond...

Plant Part Salad Lovely, lovely!  Pick a plant part (eg tomato) pick the part of the plant it is (eg fruit) and bingo! it goes in the salad!  Takes a while to download, but you can load it before use and it's worth its wait in gold. 

Worm World Get the dirt on the worms!  Watch them being born or see their hearts beating (yes, they do have them - five in fact!)  Lots of other fantastic resources which the younger scientist will adore!  Try the Slime Quiz for starters.

Eggs to Toads lists a superb range of amphibious resources (?).  Whether you're a toad watcher or a frog fancier, you'll find all you need to know about the life cycle of these slimy subjects.  And no need to handle one, either...

X-ray Imaging  This simulation lets you see how imaging techniques can let you see inside an object (such as the human body or an alien!).

Kidsfood  An interactive site for kids designed to promote healthy eating and nutrition. Games, competitions, challenges and puzzles make this a good site to let KS2 children loose on.  Better still set them a points target to see how well they understand the need for good nutrition.

Seeing, Hearing, Smelling World   A multi sensory site providing facts, data and other on-line resources. Links to experts and current research.

Sight vs. Sound  A virtual learning tool. Test your responses to these two different imputes. What does this tell us about the development of our senses?

 

Make a Splash with Colour is a great site for KS2 or as a teachers resource for all primary.  It puts colour in context as well as covering some important ideas. 

Marvellous Machines Springs, gears, friction, pulleys and planes... some good experiments (including printable resources) to do in school or try at home.  Great for technology, too, with a separate section on Hands On Technology.

Bash the Trash make musical (?) instruments from... trash.  Or rubbish to you.  Great activities for investigating sound and driving the teacher in the next class crazy.  Lots more at Musical Craft Projects

Research Lesson  This page offers a research lesson plan on health and fitness, understanding nutrition and food nutrients and how these affect physical performance. Web links to enable the research are provided.

Materials and the Weather   A website for Key Stage 1 children looking at materials used for clothing designed for different weather.  This was created by a primary school and is beautiful in its simplicity!

Education Center Activity Eat Right!   A brilliant plan to illustrate a healthy diet. Simple print out available for whole class use. Requires simple construction of own food triangle. Can be single lesson or extendable. Very good simple lesson plan.

Numeracy

 
The ArithmAttack
Great for creating a sense of competition. The children can test themselves against each other by seeing how many computer-generated arithmetic problems can be answered in 60 seconds.

Birmingham Grid for Learning A very colourful website which definitely has a ‘kids’ feel to it. Plenty of activities to keep the young-learner active, but if boredom beckons then there are plenty of links to more maths learning websites.

Plane Maths Visually impressive with a high level of interactivity makes for a fun and intuitive learning experience. The website incorporates ‘real-world’ concepts within its structure which makes the maths much more interesting and, inevitably, more useful.  Plane as in aeroplane.

Puzzlemaths  This website uses shockwave to power the interactive games which are very well designed and make the user think decisively. Varying levels of difficult also give the user an added challenge. Excellent graphics compliment this usable and effective maths learning website.

Maths Tutor Quite a simplistic and overtly colourful website with some useful mathematical information, focusing mainly on angles and scientific measurements (which could be seen as leaning more towards the scientific than mathematical). It also has an online test facility, similar to that of an actual exam, which proves to be useful.

MathsMansion This is a great challenge for ks2 students. Not only is it a good learning experience, it is also an interesting and somewhat exciting story as well. Great graphics and a simple and usable interface is an added bonus.

mega maths
A variety of games allow children to practice their Maths in a fun way. Aimed at children aged 7-9 and focussing on shapes and multiplication tables. Particularly enjoyable is the world of tables/pick a number/table tournament.

clockwise
Time: Clever but simple game to teach pupils to tell the time using the character Dynamo from the popular schools programme. Uses a digital clock as well as the traditional clock face.

free school worksheets in english, maths and science
Tutorial world provides free assessment worksheets for the pupil to practice. Simply print the exercise and then check against the answers provided.

Welcome to Megamaths
This excellent BBC site is designed to complement and support the TV series Megamaths. Typically, the site and its activities are top notch.

 

Aunty Math is a basic but colourful website and features day to day challenges which children must try to complete. Once completed, the solution may, at a student’s discretion, by emailed to ‘Aunty Math’. A well thought out and explained site.

Alien tables
You must only allow (deactivate) spacecraft to enter which have numbers that are a multiple of the selected number; hyperblast the others (enemies) - a great for learning multiplication tables

battlestar mathematica
A superb game where, if you get the questions right, you can control the battleship and shoot the asteroids.

number cruncher
Answer these mental maths problems and see the numbers crunch. Four levels cover operators on one or two digit numbers

penalty shootout
First choose your player and goalie, then level of difficulty (from four) and answer these mental maths questions - if you're right you get to take and score the penalty!

worm bingo
Shoot the worms to obtain the numbers to complete the sum. a strange and intriguing game - great for mental arithmetic

Checkout Challenge
An idea for a game to improve pupils' mental calculations. Children get to become the shop checkout, in a fun activity where children purchase items and keep running totals. Lots of scope for differentiation with larger numbers. A good idea for a competitive activity!

beantime stories
A great site for stories for younger children. Beautifully illustrated with lots of related activities, this site will enchant children and be welcomed by parents and teachers.

stories for children of all ages
Here's a wonderful resource for all busy parents, just select a story and print it out. Parents and Teachers will discover a wealth of great stories to read to their children and pupils respectively.

Grimm fairy tales
fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Read and hear interactive, narrated, animated stories.

BBC Education - Words and Pictures Colourful games, print offs, animations and activities to help 5 to 7 year olds with reading and phonics - an invaluable resource for the Literacy Hour and fun to use at home

spelling it right - slightly pedantic format, but an excellent basic grammar and spelling guide aimed at helping parents to help their children

grammar gorillas - this website offers online activities for visitors to test their grammar knowledge. A teachers' practical advice, suggestions and good information about reading. Worth checking out for new approaches.

writing den - an on-line learning tool to assist students with their writing. Features include help and tips for grammar, words, sentence writing, and paragraphs. There is a teacher's guide and you can have a "word of the day" e-mailed to you.

puzzlemaker - students can devise their own word searches or crossword games, based on the spelling lists they have just learnt, then try them out on each other.

if you like worksheets, this site has a fairly good selection. Some on-line versions, others in pdf format for better printing, though of course you can't edit them.

absolutely whootie
is brightly designed and great. Stories to print off, sounds to listen to, word searches and so on. Don't be put off by the login, keep clicking around; there is loads of stuff from different cultures and religions.

stories from the web
a lovely site for children to develop a love and understanding of literature and writing. Some unusual activities and inspirational ideas for materials relating to pirates.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland  Everyone can enjoy this online version of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" complete with accompanying music. You'll have to pay for the complete version but this site is well worth a visit.
